Lake Maggiore, also called Verbano, has the east bank in Lombardy and the west one in Piedmont: the north-pointing is in Switzerland in the canton of Ticino. Lake Maggiore has always been a tourist destination: on its shores rise historic towns and seaside resorts, luxury hotels and great places for fun and relaxation.
Arona, Verbania, Stresa, Intra, Laveno, Luino, Ispra and Locarno in the far north, are some of the most popular cities on the lake. Further info about Lake Maggiore
You can travel the whole coast driving down the Highway 394, on the side of Lombardy and Highway 33 on the Piedmont side. Navigating on the lake you can get from one bank to another in a short time. The main hydrofoil and ferry lines (some of which are remarkable, as the paddle steamer Piemonte) link the more than 35 ports around the lake, including the islands.
Lake Maggiore offers many opportunities to sports enthusiasts. You can play golf at the golf clubs of Premeno, Stresa and Bogogno; in the area there are many sailing, water skiing and scuba diving schools; on Mottarone - the mountain that overlooks the lake, there are hiking trails, bicycle paths and facilities for winter skiing; on several peaks you can enjoy paragliding and hang gliding.
For those who love to relax there are spas in Bognaco, Crodo, Premia as well as many wellness centers. The hotel offer on Lake Maggiore is very wide, from economical solutions to great luxury hotels in Stresa and Arona.
