The Lantern festivalOne of the major Florentine basilicas, S.S. Annunziata, is dedicated to the cult of the Madonna, with a festival celebrating her birthday. This event had great impact in the past particularly among the peasants of the surrounding countryside, who could take advantage of this occasion for selling their products. Those coming from far had to travel overnight and carried lanterns to light their way. These lanterns, called rificolone became the prime target of the Florentine youths going out at night. Nowadays, the children who carry their "rificolone" through the rows of stalls lining in piazza S.S Annunziata and the streets of the historical centre, are still the target of young rascals armed with slings with clay pellets who infiltrate the crowds and try to hit the paper lanterns. The Explosion of the CartEvery year on Easter Sunday Florentine gather in the Cathedral Square to attend the flying of a dove-shaped rocket known as la Colombina, and the burning of a huge wooden cart. The history of this event combines religious artifacts with pyrotechnic machinery in a really amazing way. The original pagan ritual, aiming at securing a good harvest, has been gradually replaced by the Christian meaning of celebrating the resurrection of the Christ. The Costume FootballThe earliest information about Traditional Football or Costume Football played in front of the Basilica of Santa Croce dates back to the early 15th century, when the event was reserved to the younger member of the aristocracy. Matches were held during the Carnival or during the main religious festivals. Documented information about the Costume Football dates back to 1580, when Giovanni Maria de' Bardi published his "Discorso sopra il giuoco del calcio fiorentino" (Explanation over the game of Florentine football), establishing rules and regulations. The cricket feastThe "Festa del Grillo" is a popular event held every year on Ascension day in the Cascine park. It derives from the custom of "celebrating the crickets" that once invaded the crops.
