Palazzo Vecchio and Piazza della Signoria The most important civil building in Florence, Palazzo Vecchio, was first built in 1299 on the design of Arnolfo di Cambio. Once the seat of the Priori delle Arti and the Signoria, it was remodelled several times during the centuries. The so-called Loggia dei Lanzi and the massive facade overlook the square where you will admire several famous statues among which: Cellini's "Perseus holding the head of Medusa", Giambologna's "The Rape of the Sabines" and "Hercules and the Centaur", Bartolomeo Ammannati's Neptune Fountain, Donatello's heraldic lion the copy of Donatello's "Judith and Holofernes", the copy of Michelangelo's David, Baccio Bandinelli's "Hercules"
Originally built as a meeting place for the governors, it today hosts the City Hall. The inside is also worth visiting. Don't miss the Salone dei Cinquecento, the Studio of Francesco I de' Medici, the Room of the Elements and the Hall of Lilies.
