Plenty of events may attract visitors towards Venice all the year round:
The International Film Festival
The epitome of a movie city, in September it brings to the Lido the very best international movie stars.
The Biennale
Every two years, the International Exhibition of Contemporary Art is held at Giardini di Castello. Inaugurated in 1895, it is an extraordinary showcase of international avant-garde art.
The Redemeer
This religious feast falls on the 3rd Sunday of July. It began in the late sixteenth century, when the Venetian people, stricken by the plague, built the Church of the Redeemer and promised they would honour the Basilica every year if the city had been rid of the disease. At sunset, boats of all kinds flock to the basin of Saint Mark and to Canale della Giudecca to watch an incredible firework display starting at 11.30 pm.
The Carnival
In February until the day before Ash Wednesday, the city is invaded by masks taking part in the elusive, ambiguous and fleeting game of roles and disguises that takes inspiration from the traditional spirit of the Serenissima, which has always been known as a free and lascivious state. Every year, a different theme is celebrated.
The Festa della Sensa
It is held on the 3rd Sunday of May to celebrate the marriage between Venice and the Sea, when a wedding ring is thrown into the waters of the Lagoon. In the past, it was the Doge to accomplish the symbolical gesture while today it is entrusted to authorities.
The Historical boat race
It is one of the many boat races organised during the year. Multicoloured boats of all kinds file quickly past as they race on the Canal Grande.
