Hotel The Antica Locanda Al Gambero is located in the heart of Venice 150 meters from Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge...
Venice can be really attractive not only for its natural and historical beauties, but also for its gorgeous shopping windows. The city is a true paradise for real shopping fans: you will find everything you were looking for, from souvenir shops to the most luxurious high fashion boutiques. You will also find some shops selling the typical handicrafts for which the city has become famous over the centuries:
- Burano Lace, that is fine silk and linen products or lovely Venetian lace and embroidery
- Murano Glass produced by artisans and furnaces for over 1,000 years
- Venetian Masks, the city's most imaginative and famous masks for Carnival
The glass objects are a really old tradition. They are made in the island of Murano by master glass blowers, using techniques handed down over the centuries. A very popular souvenir is la murrina, a slim round pendant in colored glass hang on a gold or silver necklace. Some other shops sell necklaces made with colored Venetian pearls.
Mask shops are also very popular: they sell pottery and craft items in terracotta.
You could alsotake some food as a souvenir: many Venetian pastries sell packages of typical sweets, such as the zaeti.
Venice's main fashion street isthe famous Mercerie, running north between Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge, where you will find famous Italian brands such as Max Mara, Sergio Rossi, Cartier, Krizia, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and many others. Calle XXII Marzo, which is a wide street that begins west of Piazza San Marco and wends its way to the expansive Campo Santo Stefano near the Accademia, is also well worth a visit: here you will find Bulgari, Bruno Magli, Versace, and Damiani brand names.
The best shops for a range of high fashion are:
- La Coupole in Frezzeria and Calle Larga XXII Marzo
- Elysée in Frezzeria and Calle Goldoni
- Al Duca d'Aosta in Merceria del Capitello
- La Fenice in Calle Larga XXII Marzo
If you are looking for antiques you should visit some of the shops around campo Santo Stefano and San Marco square. Bargain hunters should be able to pick something up in the Mercatino dell'Antiquariato (antiques fair)in Campo San Maurizio between Piazza San Marco and Campo Santo Stefano. This market is organised three times a year, normally around April, mid-September and the weekend before Christmas.
The traders in the San Barnaba district are also slightly downmarket, running the kind of places where you could find a faded wooden cherub or an old picture frame.
Prices are rather high in Venice and most of the items could be more expensive here than in bigger cities, where you'll also have a wider and better selection of clothing, leathersand accessories. For cheaper prices you should visit the area between Campo San Bartolomeo and Santi Apostoli. But if you see something that you really like, buy it straight away: you might get lost in Venetian’s narrow streetsand not be able to come back again to the same shop.
