Hotel Antigo Trovatore Venice

Special care is reserved to the Antigo Trovatore by a property which has been a hotel for over a century and has always been family managed.

Located at less than one hundred meters from the splendid St. Mark's Square, in the heart of Venice, the hotel is easily reached from the centrally located Riva Degli Schiavoni (which offers a number of boat stops for the city water transport system), the street where our alley, Calle delle Rasse, opens out onto. This historic street has been called in this way since Medieval times because here there were many laboratories and shops making and selling cloth in "lana rassa", a rough wool which was used to make the covers for the cabins of the famous gondolas.

The Hotel is located in an invaluable example of the "lesser buildings" of Venetian architecture: historic constructions developed in such a way as to best take advantage of the urban space, so precious because conditioned by the surrounding water. Here, the ancient vertical structure, in a tower form, places the guest rooms and the other elements of the hotel in a column, maintaining many elements of a century old tradition

The Antigo Trovatore is located in a strategic position for the tourist, not only due to its proximity to the splendid Saint Mark's Square but also for the convenience it offers for reaching the other numerous monuments and churches of great cultural and artistic interest in the city.

Just 50 metres from the hotel we find the beautiful Church of San Zaccaria, overlooking the square of the same name. The façade, designed by Codussi between 1480 and 1500, breaks with the traditional Venetian Gothic style. This was visited once a year by the Doges at Easter time in order to commemorate the bequest made by the Benedictine monks in the twelfth century. Inside, on the left hand altar, there is a marvellous painting by Bellini: The Holy Conversation.

Just 5 minutes away on foot we find the square called Santa Maria Formosa, containing the church of the same name. The square is quite large and spacious and encloses a veritable anthology of architectures: from Palazzo Vitturi (Byzantine architecture from the thirteenth century) to Palazzi Donà (fourteenth century Gothic), Casa Venier (end of fifteenth century), to Palazzo Ruzzini Priuli (sixteenth century Renaissance). The church is another example of architecture designed by Codussi where on the façade, there are neither saints nor prophets, but rather representations of the gentlemen from the Cappello family who financed the construction project.

A short distance away, there is the Library of the Querini Stampalia, a building once belonging to the Querini family. On the ground floor, we can admire an example of the successful integration of modern art by the architect Carlo Scarpa, who redesigned the entrance between 1959 and 1963. On the first floor, there is the library, which has always been well frequented by students and intellectuals. The second floor houses the special gallery dedicated to the minor Venetian paintings and is well known for paintings by Pietro Longhi, who represented scenes of daily Venetian life from the 1700's.
