Hotel Jfi Hermitage 1- Assisi is a place where you have to be fit enough to walk up and down stairs and hills a lot to do/enjoy anything and this means at times carrying your luggage. 2- Location: JFIHerm is hard to find when you do not know exactly where it is. It is tucked in off a "main" walking street to the Basilica. But it is not that easily visible. More should be done to help guests find the place. We arrived tired by train on Sunday afternoon when there were no info services available and had to pick our way through many variations of "just up ahead about 200 meters.." We found it only by luck. and some backtrackng. Better directions should be supplied. ON the other hand once you know the place it is pretty convenient to both the Basilica and the "town square". I enjoyed the location very much. 3- Room: The rooms are too small. Ours was "Matisse". Hardly enough space to open a bag without re-arranging the furniture. The bathroom was clean and had adequate space, good water pressure, a nice supply of towels and a nice shower. The view was beautiful, pleasant and relaxing with nice shuttered gothic arched windows that opened inward which is a minor issue because space is a premium. Bed was good (firm). TV: We are not into TV but the only English language station was CNN. Why don't they just supply a mallet for you to hit yourself repeatedly on the head with and save on electricity. Staff/Service: Generally very good. I suspect it is a small family run business.. The older woman who cleaned the rooms was very pleasant and did a great job. Front desk staff was pleasant and helpful also. Breakfast: Included. Coffee was very good. You are apportioned rolls. fruit, cereal, yogurt and a treat. No eggs etc. All in all it was OK. Rigidity: We booked 4 nights when 3 would have been fine for us. We wanted to cancel the fourth night to go back to Florence for another day. We gave them notice at end of the second day. They insisted we would have to pay anyway. We stayed the extra day as Assisi is just pleasant to be in. Breakfast begins at 8:15. Since we had to catch a train we asked to have it at 8 and they accommodated after getting approval from the higher ups. This is my 3rd trip to Italy (once in the 1960s as a student and once in the late 90s). We found Italy to be generally expensive for what you get. The formal exchange rate was 1.40+USD to the Euro. Food was disappointing. For a place that is supposed to be into slow food and quality most easily accessible options include pizzas, panini and reheated (microwaved) pastas, meals with 1st and second dishes at easily $20-25/person. $3 for a piccolo cup o gelato. We found soups especially are served inadequately warmed up. This is not what I expected for. Better deals can be found and occasionally were found by luck. But i did not want to spend our vacation foraging for a decent meal. Ingredients were generallty very good. I am an Italian American and grew up in NY City on excellent home cooking and a wide price range of very good restaurant choices. MY guess is NY is still better than Italy in all price ranges for Italian food. Beside Assisi we visited Padua, Milan, Florence, PIsa, and San Gimignano. I am 64. I have traveled/lived abroad all my life for business, education and pleasure. This was a vacation for my wife and me. We are not likely to do Italy this way again.

Hotel Jfi Hermitage The worst thing about this hotel is it is half way down (or up) a steep set of stone steps. This means that travellers with heavy suitcases have to drag them up or push them down to access the hotel. Also, because of its position - not on a road - it is very hard to find and we spent ages going round in circles. Also, there is no parking available unless the guests are prepared to walk for 10 minutes and pay for parking and the directions to the parking place were vague and not helpful which would have made it impossible to find especially for people who don't speak Italian and are unable to ask directions. The quality of the hotel did not make up for the above problems.

Hotel Jfi Hermitage Our only complaint was that space was too tight in the room. It made the stay uncomfortable. Otherwise, the cleanliness and quality was good.

Hotel Jfi Hermitage Unbeknown to us was the fact the hotel was undergoing a large renovation where they were using a jackhammer virtually all day. There was a significant amount of noise and dust. In fact, we were the only guests staying at the hotel. The noise was so loud we could only laugh at our situation. We ended up requesting our room be changed to a suite at the end of the hotel. The room was very nice, private and most importantly, significantly quiter. The receptionist was quite accommodating and apologetic and did not charge us for the room upgrade. This is a quaint little hotel which I am sure will be very pleasent once the cosntruction is fininshed.
