The Royal Hotel is situated in what used to a noble palace during the 18th century. The hotel has maintained the style and elegance of the original building but with a revised sobriety, and succeeds simultaneously in offering the highest standards of quality in all of its many services. The hotel boasts many splendid and unique terraces overlooking the antique rooftops of the historic centre, offering a wonderful opportunity for guests to discover the hidden treasures of late, sumptuous Sicilian Baroque.

The proximity of the hotel to the Cathedral of Catania, and to the most important faculties of the Universityof Catania makes the Royal Hotel the preferred starting point of reference for those wishing to visit the historic centre of Catania on foot.

Furthermore the Royal Hotel is the best viewing place in the city from which to watch the most important feast day in the city’s calendar: the festival of St Agatha, Patron Saint and protector of Catania.

Our terrace is also the perfect place to celebrate all types of special occasions, ideal for both banquets and ceremonies. It is also a suitable location for important meetings, presentations and press conferences.

The jewel in the crown of our hotel is the sun-terrace. Located on the 4th floor, far from prying eyes, it is outfitted with sun loungers and sun umbrellas. Relax and enjoy our outdoor 6 person Jacuzzi while you work on your trademark Sicilian suntan at any time of the year. You will have the sensation of walking on the rooftops of Catania, all under the watchful eye of Mount Etna.

The Royal Hotel is a four star hotel in the centre of Catania with 19 rooms. The rooms are positioned on three different levels. Each room is named after either an important Sicilian person or period of Sicilian history.

The first floor is dedicated to Vincenzo Bellini. A world-renowned composer, born in Catania, and author of noted works like La Norma. The same Norma lends her name to our most beautiful suite. This suite boasts beautiful vaulted ceilings where, following a meticulous and complex restorative project, we were able to maintain the original frescoes, painted in the 18th century. The frescoes are not the only unique features of this suite, which could more accurately be called a royal apartment. It is almost 50m2 and has a fabulous bathroom, like something directly from the fabled Arabian Nights.

The second floor is home to the rooms dedicated to Magna Grecia (Latin for “Greater Greece”): a very important period in the history of the city of Catania.

The third floor is dedicated to Giovanni Verga. This author brought the name of Catania and of Sicily into the lives of many around the world with his historical novels, names that are kept alive today in names of the rooms of our hotel.

The Suites are particularly ample with separate, clearly defined living and sleeping quarters. The Suites also offer a relaxing shower with water massage.

Our restaurant is situated on the magnificent terrace of the Royal Hotel, offering an internal view of via Crociferi.

The spectacular vista gives one the sensation of walking along the rooftops of the city. It is in this unique context that we make the very most of the perfumes and aromas that our beloved land of Sicily gives to us. We offer creative dishes, which are also highly time honored: full of flavor and delicate. Our style is innovative yet very traditional: the strongest element that characterizes the simplicity our dishes, and more importantly pays homage to the nobility of our basic ingredients, an unmistakable Sicilian treasure. Our chef decides the menu of the day based on the availability of the fresh produce found locally on a daily basis.

In conclusion a glimpse at our basement wine cellar: a truly “di-vine” place, offering our guests a vast selection of both Sicilian and international wines, it proffers some interesting ideas for special dinner engagements.

Our splendid terrace with its wonderful views has become an important meeting place for a before dinner “aperitivo”. Our barman can satisfy even the most demanding of palates.

Area information

The Royal Hotel is located just a short walking distance away from Piazza Duomo (Cathedral Square). It faces via Crociferi, a 24-hour pedestrian street and the main street of the historic centre of Catania. From here guests can discover the history, art and culture offered by the city of Catania. The Palazzo degli Elefanti (City Hall), Palazzo Asmundo di Gisira, Ursino Castle, the Convent of Santa Maria dell’Indirizzo, the house and museum of Giovanni Verga, the Massimo Theatre, the Palace of the Manganelli Princes, the Greek Theatre, the Belliniano Museum, the Roman Baths, and the Benedictine Monastery; just some examples of a very long list.

The Royal Hotel is also the best place from which to watch the most important festival of the Catanese calendar: the festival of St Agatha, Patron Saint and protector of Catania. In fact from many of our rooms, but especially from our terrace, guests can comfortably enjoy the main events of the festivities of St Agatha. From the race with the highly decorative votive candles (the so-called “candelore”) up the steep hill of via Di Sangiuliano, locally known as “a cursa de’ cannalori” to the arrival of the carriage of St Agatha who follows the votive candles, known as “a’cchianata di Sant’Aita”. The festival culminates with one of the most emotional aspects of the celebrations: the song of the Clarisse nuns, a closed order from the Convent of St Benedict, located on via Crociferi, just 200 m from our terrace. They come out just once a year to sing in honor of the Patron Saint of Catania.
