San Marco district, separated from San Polo and Dorsoduro districts from the Canal Grande, include also San Giorgio Maggiore island. The heart of the district is St. Mark's Square, where stood the Basilica di San Marco, the Church of San Gimignano and the Ducal Palace. The Procuratie or Napoleonic Wing, close the square and are placed just in front of the Basilica and the Ducal Palace. In San Marco there are also the La Fenice Theatre and Palazzo Grassi. The clock tower that stands on the square leads to the Merceria, the road leading from the square to Campo di San Bartolomeo that has always been a shopping and tourism area.
